I acted like I was not in Medical School

Filed under: General — Treah at 9:03 pm on Sunday, April 30, 2006

This weekend was the best (though you would think that school did not exist for 1 weekend.) I ran around like I had no worries in the world and did things that were just plain fun. The downside to this was that I forgot my camera for all of them. Sad huh!

First on Friday night, after a 2.5 hour nap, I went to two friend’s birthday party. We sat and talked for the whole evening. They had martinis, or something in a martini glass, and they graced me with the lovely soda in a martini glass (I can’t get over the horrid taste of most alcohol.)

Then on Saturday I watched the draft with Julie. Ok, she watched the draft while I worked on hand quilting and talked. She explained the draft a bit which was fun. I didn’t realize what an ordeal it is. She made me scoop, which was AWSOME. It is a dip that involves salsa, sour cream, ranch dressing mix, cheese and other wonderful ingredients. We then took off to a wonderful park that is about 1 hour away called Ohiopyle. What a nice place. We did about a 2 mile hike and near the end we sat on a rock that looked out at the falls and just relaxed. It was beautiful. On our way up we saw a streetfair, which we stopped at and looked at the handcrafted items. On our way back through we bought dinner, a funnel cake and fudge there. Who would have guessed I would eat a funnel cake this weekend. I love back road driving. You come across the best things.

Then today I woke up to a phone call asking me to PLEASE come play softball with my classmates cause they were short a girl in the tournament they were playing in. Ok, when you think of competitive I am probably not in your thoughts. I went out there though figuring at least they can play if I am a body on the field. Heck, I ended up enjoying it. I had more fun than I knew it was. I got to bat, and actually hit the ball. I stood in the outfield, not much action in. I even made it to home plate one time (with the obvious help of the batting geniuses behind me).

To round off my extremely active weekend I took Vandy on a 45 minute walk. She has not moved since we got home.

New rotation

Filed under: School, Sewing — Treah at 9:30 pm on Thursday, April 27, 2006

I started a new rotation. Psychiatry. I am on adolescent psychiatry right now. Learning a lot I figure. The hours on this rotation are AWSOME but I am unsure on my schedule. Everything is written on different papers and then there are all these papers to have attendings fill out and stuff like that. I think all the paperwork is a bit over my head. Sad, in medschool and I think paperwork for the rotation is over my head. I am working a good 8 hours a day (which seems awsome) but there is more down time to just get to know the patients and understand more about where they are coming from. So I say the hours are awsome but it is also just that you have more time to just talk to the patients and learn from them. Other rotations you spend a lot of time at a computer looking up labs or running around trying to help with the days work.

I have been using my sewing machine for quilting lately. It has been going better now that I have learned that I HAVE to super baste. If you do not then the fabric just bunches up to a rediculous amount.

Off to study neurology (2 week part of this rotation.)

Hiking - on a rail trail

Filed under: General — Treah at 8:11 pm on Monday, April 24, 2006

Today I had this brilliant idea to go look for a geocache. After wasting a ton of gas (and therefore money we do not have) we found the spot for parking - but three cars had already gotten there clogging the spots up. Not a pleasant moment becuase vandy was whinning and I wanted to hike. We then drove on over to the jeep dealership, parked the car and took a nice walk on the rail trail. At this time the daylight was starting to disappear. We probably went about 1.5 miles. Justin would swear 12 (he did see a mile marker that said 12.) Here are some Vandy in motion shots. It is all I got. All blurry.

Thank God she was cute again cause as of 4 AM I was not thrilled with this dog. Lets just say it involved a bezoar. You can look it up.

Today I started my psych neurology rotation. It was nice. These people have a much nicer lifer when it comes to time committment. I think I am going to like the work on this service too. I am scared out of my mind about the test at the end. It will be on my birthday though. That will make me happy. I will have 2 - 2 hour tests and then I am done for 2 weeks. I can fully relax from about 3 PM on that day.

Girly Gifts

Filed under: General — Treah at 9:42 pm on Saturday, April 22, 2006

So I want to send my three little (but growing up) girl cousins a fun package of small gifts. Here is a copy of the image I used to make postcards. They will each get 4 with their names on them. I just changed the name and moved it around for Ashley and Alyssa. Here are some pictures of their gifts. Along with their postcards they will get earings (an extra set for amanda because I left her out before) and small travel tissue holders. I hope they enjoy.

I hope they like.

Tomorrow I start my last 3rd year rotation. I could not be happier. I even saved the least time consuming one for last. The test at the end is hard though so I guess it will even out with studying. I bought books today off a 4th year who is selling his. $45 for the three books I wanted. I figure that will save me a good $50. Now just if I could have about 3 or 4 more days off to recuperate.

I have hardly moved this weekend. I figured I would clean and do some crafting but I did very little crafting (and any cleaning feels like a lot.) I mostly just did nothing. Is that bad? It felt good but now I need 3 or 4 more days to do stuff that just I want to do.

Off to write more reviews on Internal medicine. I had a couple bad experiences so those were heavily documented already. I now get to finish with all the nice happy people I worked with. Thank GOD for them!

Beautiful

I love this tree. It is in the front yard. I like the pink against my white house. These blooms literally only last about a week (if that!) Its sad to see them go.

So soon after I took the above pictures it rained. I apparently missed the big downpour due to my normal post test nap (ok, I can find a reason EVERYDAY to take a nap.)

After the above mentioned nap discussion I will continue on to house cleaning. I am not a clean person and probably never will be (sorry to all guests.) I can live in my clutter and I own a dog who creates hair faster than I can clean it, therefore, I do not try to keep up with that (though my mom tries hard when she is here too, even with sweeping every hour, it is impossible to keep up but it is nice to have her here trying!) Now we bought a Dyson vacuum about a year ago. I am still a bit creeped out by my ability to fill the container multiple times while sweeping the same spot on the same day. Could it be sucking out carpet decay. Once again I was amazed by the machine tonight. oh well, floors are still dirty. My dream would be no carpet. I dont even care that its in the bedroom.

The rest of my day was filled with tv and making little lovely packages for my cousins. I have more to make on those and little notes to write them. They are each getting some cute postcards with their names on them, some earings (Amanda gets 2 sets cause I left her out on my last trip) and hopefully they will each get a tissue holder to keep in their bookbags.

Medical School

Filed under: General — Treah at 9:37 pm on Wednesday, April 19, 2006

This takes place of a whole paragraph about the “happiness” found in medical school training. I deleted it. Lets just say today has made me want to blend in. I can be found hiding in the back corner of rounds. I like my residents a lot though.

Tomorrow is good. I will be welcomed into the department I will continue my residency in. This makes me happy. I took call on this night just so I wont be late to my welcoming (thank you post call day!) Call won’t be bad because I am with a resident who I have to beg to give me work. I plan to study more than sleep.

Call rooms are interesting. This year we were blessed with a new call area. We use to be in a small single hospital room that had 2 sets of bunks in it. There was a bathroom too. It was miserable. Luckily we have moved up in the world to a hallway with more rooms. These rooms are still small but they now include some with single beds (boys and girls still have 1 room with two beds in it each), a lamp, a phone and A COMPUTER!! The old room I would creep in at midnight and try to find an empty bed in the dark. Could have become a disaster. Now the bathrooms are down the hall so the lights are on to find them. The rooms are at most 2 people in a room (but most have 1 bed.) If my pager goes off now, it wakes me up. Not the other three in the room with me. I like that. I like not being with the person carrying the trauma pager (I use to NEVER go to bed because of that thing.) These call rooms are nice. Maybe it was the plan. Show us horrible call rooms and then rip those out and send us to nice call rooms. I think we all appreciate what we have now! At least I know I do.Â

 Off to study.

Oh, my parents started a blog. BusyDingBat!I like it!

Upsetting Day to Geocaching Day

Filed under: Geocaching, Vandalia — Treah at 6:50 pm on Tuesday, April 11, 2006
So school today was upsetting. No reason I feel like discussing publically on a blog but it was a non fun day. Anyways I had tons to look forward to. I had dinner in the crock pot. yummmm and more daylight due to the time change! And becuase I didn’t have to cook that also factored into more daylight hours. In the end I got Justin and Vandy out for a hike and geocache. I can honestly say we were still close to many roads and lots of people but far enough in that they couldn’t see us and we couldn’t see them. Vandy jumpped on a big log and I found my cache. It was a fun cache cause its the first time I put handmaded earings into a cache. Maybe someone out there will like them. I also picked up a travelbug which needs to make its way to Kentucky. Challange for me! I will leave you with some pictures of the evening. The small hollow stump is where the cache was. It fit so perfectly down in there.

Wow, its been a while

Filed under: Photography, School — Treah at 7:22 pm on Monday, April 10, 2006

I guess I need to get better at keeping up with my posts. This week I started working on the Cardiac Care Unit. It looks like it will be a nice two weeks. Everyone so far has been very kind. It is suppose to be very time consuming but I actually left at 3:30 today. I hear the attending coming on next is very nice. The one on now is also very nice. Lets all hope!!

I have been sewing. Possibly sewing more than I should be. I almost have my second quilt top done. I sewed a few of those squares tonight. I am going to machine quilt this one though. I will have to buy a back for it and considered we just got the new car it may be a while before I can buy that quantity of fabric. I was going to use some of my Christmas money on that and to buy some fabric online that I like but my GPS unit recently started acting up so it looks like my money has to go to that. I love getting to go hiking and even though I do not get to go often I like the option to go when I can.

I made a tablerunner recently and I like it but I stole the pattern from a famous online quilter and am not sure on the rules about that. I guess this one will be only viewed in person. I like it in person but when I look at pictures of it I am not as into it. We will see. Maybe I like it cause I made it. Not sure.

I will leave you with pictures of Morgantown taken this weekend. These were fun to take. My friend Cara invited me out for a picture taking trip. We had a blast and took well over 120 photos in a hour and a half. We both got some we like!

Weekends up

Filed under: Vandalia — Treah at 10:19 pm on Sunday, April 2, 2006

I am in the clinical part of this rotation. Since clinic lasts from 8-5 I have great hours. No call. No weekends. Kinda nice and not normal. This weekend I did more sewing that I probably should have. I finished off 2 more spools of white thread. That makes 3 spools of thread finished lately. Not sure I know what to do when that happens. I also spent friday evening doing what Vandy would want to do and then today Justin was AWSOME and decided we should walk her and take her to the field also. Here she is when we got home. Pityful.

100_1180 (Small).JPG

After the field a friend came over and I worked on my quilt while she did some knitting. I’m 3/4th of the way done with the top for my new quilt. Its exciting to see it coming together. I want to get the Denyse Schmidt quilting book and use a quilt in there as a pattern for my next one but that could be a long ways off. We will see.

Tonight was awsome to in that I watched a lovely chick flick. It was nice.

Well, off to watch Grey Anatomy if Justin is up to it. I love that show. At it hard starting tomorrow. Test will be in 3 weeks and my last two weeks are hard.

More Blue, New Blue

Last night and this morning I went for finishing my latest tablerunner instead of studying. Here are the pictures. I like it but in the pictures you can see where they fabric bunched up. I have to get better with the walking foot on my machine. I love the foot though. I think Im going to be addicted to machine quilting rather than hand quilting. That is not the part I enjoy.
